Girls, please be careful around this man. Erhen seems welcoming and nice at first, but he isn’t what he seems. Google Maps keeps rejecting my review, so I have to keep this simple. If you book this place, please watch out for him.

I’m glad places like this exist. It’s a nice haven for travelers on a low budget, and the owner is great and very helpful. Ayasofia and the other sights take about half an hour to reach, but you need to use public transport.

Erhan runs a welcoming hostel in Istanbul’s old town. It’s close to train stations for heading to Kadikoy and Karaköy, and about an hour’s walk from the grand bazaar.

I can’t recommend this hostel. The heating was broken, and the room felt like a refrigerator, maybe 8 or 9 degrees Celsius. I had to sleep overnight in my jacket and couldn’t get any sleep. There was no hot water either, so I left first thing in the morning.
