We arrived for New Year’s after another hotel had already scammed us, and found this place on Booking at what seemed like a reasonable rate. At check-in they wouldn’t accept a card. They wanted more money in cash for the room, or offered the basement room for the same price, also paid upfront in cash. We booked through Booking to avoid finding an ATM, expecting to be given that basement room. It was freezing down there, with no heat or hot water, and the toilet leaked. When I asked whether the water could be fixed or we could move to a room with hot water, I was told a plumber wouldn’t come until four days later, after we’d leave. They said another room was available if we paid double, in cash. We agreed to stay in the basement, but then they said they had cancelled that booking because we complained, and we couldn’t stay. The only choices were to pay cash for the much more expensive room or leave. They promised Booking would refund us, but we still haven’t received the money, and they wouldn’t give us proof of the cancellation. The staff were no help. Whenever we asked for anything, they called the manager, who I felt had scammed us. If he couldn’t be reached, they claimed it was their first day and they knew nothing. Three different men said this on separate occasions. The front desk staff even said they didn’t know how to check the hotel email printed on their business cards. A complete nightmare.

The night desk worker and the woman serving breakfast were both pleasant, and the room had a really nice view. But the room itself was tiny, and cleanliness was awful. The bedding hadn’t been changed after the previous guests. After we asked several times, someone from the lobby just put a clean sheet over the dirty one. There was hair and dirt all over the bathroom, and the toilet was stained. The cleaner only made the bed and changed the towels. Breakfast was mediocre, just a prepared plate of cheese and a few vegetables with one boiled egg. For this price, there are much cleaner places to stay.

The location is good, but that doesn’t make up for the lack of basic comfort. The rooms are cramped and uncomfortable, and we found a cockroach on the second-to-last night. During our multi-day stay, the Wi-Fi was down most of the time, with nobody seeming able or willing to sort it out. We also had to ask for toilet paper because the cleaning lady had left none. That feels pretty insulting. Be careful.

We loved the room with the sea view, and you can even dance Tango in the patio. The welcome at Mayer Hotel was so warm. Everyone was kind and attentive, and they handled any request we had. They also served us breakfast even though the breakfast time had already passed. Really glad we came.

The hotel has just been refurbished, so everything felt clean and new. Our bathroom was spacious, and we had a little balcony with a sea view. Breakfast was quite basic, with too few hot cooked options. The staff were attentive and very friendly. It’s tucked off the main road in a wholesalers’ district full of clothes, bags, shoes, and other goods.
