Wonder Wood Hotel

The hosts, Ubaid, Kadam and Alpren, were lovely, as was the kind woman whose name I forgot to ask. They carried our luggage to the room and later back to the taxi, and were always happy to answer questions about the city. When the first room they showed us had a slight smell, they gladly switched us to a similar one. Our room was spacious, clean, and had everything we needed. The staff were attentive and easy to reach. It’s well placed for Sultanahmet’s main sights and some great places to eat on the other side. There’s a bit of a climb, as in much of Istanbul, but I thought the location was ideal. I can’t think of anything negative to say. It felt like a home away from home, and the team has set such a high bar that I’m not sure I’ll enjoy another stay in Istanbul as much. 5/5, without a second thought. Thank you!

After three nights of barely sleeping, I asked if I could move rooms, and the staff kindly moved me down the street to a more premium luxury room in a private apartment block at no extra charge. They were incredibly accommodating, and the change made me much more comfortable. It left me with a very favourable impression. The first room was spacious, clean, and well equipped, with a nice TV and a very good shower and bathroom. The bedding seemed a bit worn and wasn’t especially comfortable, though I did get used to it. Noise was the bigger issue: the room was close to the road, and scooters, fighting cats, and late night pedestrians made it hard to sleep. The road looked quiet because there were no cars, but it definitely wasn’t. The creaky room above added to it. It’s a small, personal place run by friendly people, with a homely feel. The location is fabulous for walking to the old city sights. There’s a gorgeous mosque nearby, and the main attractions are around 5-10 minutes away on foot, though the walk is fairly steep. I’d recommend it for a couple of nights near Sultanahmet. I’d give it four and a half stars if I could, but I’m rounding up to five with those caveats.

This is a cosy, family-run place, not a grand corporate hotel, and I’m happy to support it. As a solo woman traveller, I felt safe and well looked after. The price was very reasonable and the location was perfect. I’m a repeat guest, and the friendly staff upgraded my room when I arrived. The manager gave me a number to use if anything came up and replied right away to my questions, even late in the evening.

For 30€ a night in February '26, this is probably the best budget option in this part of Istanbul. It’s safe, quiet, and a great starting point for sightseeing. The location gets a clear 10/10. Staff were incredibly friendly and helped when our heating stopped working. It’s not a five-star hotel with huge rooms, but everything was clean and tidy, including the showers, and there was no mold.
