The room smelled as if someone had been smoking, and the heater only worked for a few hours even though it was -14°C outside. Still, the staff were friendly and willing to help, and the atmosphere was quiet and peaceful.

Buyuk Asur Hotel is almost right in the heart of the city, and I really liked the location. The receptionists were quite friendly and spoke English well enough. Like others have mentioned, the rooms smell as if someone has been smoking, but you kind of get used to it after a couple of minutes.

I stayed here in 2011 after climbing Mount Ararat. The breakfast was to die for, especially the baked bread, which I think was the best I had in Turkey. Even after returning to Turkey again and again, I still think back to Van. The hotel was excellent, and the staff were attentive.

We’ve stayed here year after year with groups of 30 people, and I can’t wait to go back. The service is great, the staff are friendly, and the place is clean with a perfect location. The breakfast is delicious too. It’s the best hotel in town.
