City Hotel Taipei

Cockroaches in the lobby and poor soundproofing made this stay miserable. For three nights in a row, the Taiwanese people in the next room slammed their door loudly at 1 a.m., startling me awake each time. They were also very loud and extremely rude. I told the staff, but nothing improved. It was a nightmare, and I’m so disappointed with people’s manners here that I won’t return to Taipei.

The whole building smelled awful, like old feet, and our room, #1205, reeked of urine. The lobby was disgusting too. The heater barely worked, and the hot water stopped after about 30 seconds in the shower. Basic amenities weren’t there, and the hotel’s online advertising was false. We were traveling together but got only one key. They also asked us to pay in cash instead of by credit card. This was by far the worst hotel in Taipei, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Room #1103 on the 11th floor was good, had a bathtub, and came at a reasonable rate. My friends stayed here too, but their room on the 6th floor smelled really bad and felt old, with low ceilings. If you stay, I’d choose the 11th floor.

The most alarming part of my second stay was a man opening our door with his card key at 5 am. I yelled in fear and he left. I suspect the card keys on the second floor may all open any room, so be aware. I stayed here twice and both times booked the renovated room shown on the website, with carpet and a new bathroom. Instead, I was given an old room with linoleum floors, an old bathroom, and a strange bed. They agreed to move me both times, but on the first stay charged another 300 NTD. The staff are friendly and answer questions, but the hotel isn’t worth it. The location is only okay, not very close to the subway or good sightseeing spots. By all means, don’t stay here. It felt dangerous.
