For a solo overnight layover, this was amazing value. Getting there from the airport was easy on the airport express train, then about a 20-minute walk. If you’ve got luggage, there’s a way to take one transfer and get off at a closer subway station instead. Check-in was breezy at the hostel, which is on the fourth floor of a residential building. The male staff member was very friendly and spoke amazing English. The room was clean and roomier than I expected. The bed was thin enough that I could feel the hard frame, and I could hear doors opening at night, but I still slept well. Shared toilets and showers were very clean. Towels cost a small number of coins to buy, something like NT $5, and there’s a paid washer and dryer. I’d definitely come back next time I visit, and recommend it to solo travelers.

The location is handy for getting around, and the place was clean and quiet. Front desk manager Jay was really nice. He has a background in tourism and knows Taipei well, so I learned a lot of local things from him.
The service was weak, facilities were below standard, and with the hygiene issues I didn’t think the price was justified. In my experience, this was among the five worst hostels I’ve stayed in worldwide over more than ten years of travel. I also felt the reviews were inflated by promotions asking guests to leave five-star ratings. The reception is supposed to be open from 11 AM to 7 PM, but staff often left earlier, around 6:30. There were persistent bad smells in the rooms and kitchen, and the toilets were often dirty and unattended. There’s no breakfast, towels cost extra, and toiletries were left empty. The mattresses were extremely thin, and sharing bathrooms between genders was very uncomfortable. The staff were the least friendly I’ve encountered in all my hostel stays. They barely said hello first and didn’t smile.
I used Le Passage as the start and finish point for my bike tour around the island. There was plenty of room to sort out my gear and take my bike apart and put it back together.
The staff were kind and friendly, and this is the best hostel I’ve stayed at in Taipei so far. The rooms, beds, and bathroom were all clean and tidy. There’s lots of storage space for backpacks or suitcases.
