Peiling made our group of six feel more like friends staying in someone’s home than tourists in a hotel. She’s warm and bubbly, trained as an architect, and thoughtful about how a homestay should feel. She shared a local map with ideas for food, breakfast, exploring, the morning market, and braised tofu shops, and explained the building’s history throughout the cafe. We had a wonderful time and think Daxi deserves a visit, away from the usual Taipei and Jiufen spotlight. In short, the value was fantastic. The homestay only takes one group per day. There’s a two-person room and a four-person room; if the smaller one is booked first, the larger one is taken off the market too. After closing around 5pm, we had the kitchen, dining area, and retail space to ourselves, though not the owner’s home and back area. The three historic buildings include one for guests, one for the owner, and one for the cafe and retail shop. The cafe’s loft classroom could host an offsite session. The rooms are on the second floor of the middle building, up one flight of stairs, with the two-person room first and the four-person room at the back. The location is central: 10 minutes to the Thu-only night market, a five-minute stroll to the morning market, eight minutes to the old street, and 10 minutes to see Daxi Bridge lit up at night. There’s a breakfast shop opposite, a rice store two minutes away where you can buy Taiwanese rice, and a 100-year-old braised tofu shop selling special chili dipping sauce for hotpot dips or gifts. A parking space is reserved outside. The room windows open for light and ventilation, with blinds for privacy and built-in mosquito screens on the windows and the second-floor corridor door. We left our shoes outside, as at home, and had slippers inside. The Japanese-style WC and bidet were separate from the walk-in shower, which is helpful for elderly guests. Shower temperature and controls were good, although the knee-length curtains meant the floor got quite wet. Hot and cold water flasks were filled in the rooms, and we could refill them downstairs in the kitchen after the owner went home at closing. There was plenty of room for our things, with a bird-motif clothes rack, a multi-level table, a TV console, and a sofa to relax on. The wooden ceiling beams had been decorated with antlers. Peiling’s husband helped us with our luggage. There are only two rooms and just one group at a time, so we had the whole place to ourselves for our four nights, even though there were only two of us. Sleeping bags can be arranged for larger families.

This little homestay and cafe was such a lovely surprise. The owner couple put a lot of care into making everyone who comes by feel welcome, and they offer much more than just a cafe and a place to stay.

Pei Ling was a fantastic host, welcoming and incredibly hospitable. We stayed four nights as a group of two and had the whole place to ourselves. Only one group is hosted at a time, with two rooms, one for two people and one for four; sleeping bags can also be arranged for larger families. Even though the rooms are on the second floor, Pei Ling’s husband was very helpful with our luggage, and we had complete privacy and peaceful sleep. The 129-year-old historic home is in Daxi, about a 30-minute drive from Taipei. The guest space is in an independent house behind the cute little cafe at the front, while the host and her family live in another house behind. You can arrive without a plan, since Pei Ling can put together a simple, realistic daily itinerary for sightseeing, food, or cultural experiences. The places she recommended were delicious, lively, and loved by locals. There’s also a fantastic food stall opposite, known as the kitchen of Sinnan old street, and the food was really tasty and worth trying. Book early, as availability is always limited.

A nice little restaurant and cafe with good food, set in a slick old-style building.

A suggestion from the guesthouse owner led me to spend a day in Daxi pretending to be a local. It made the whole place unforgettable. Highly recommend!
