Tan Hui Modern Hotel

I'd give this place 3.5 stars, since it feels a little better than a three. The owners were very kind and accommodating. Breakfast was decent: each of the three mornings we had a fried egg, a couple of kinds of bacon, some fruit, a pastry, and hot and cold drinks. The location is a big plus, across from the bike trail and in the middle of a shopping district with plenty of good restaurants. Bike rental is easy and not very expensive. The hotel can also provide tickets for crossing the lake and visiting the Folk Village by cable car. Starbucks is a five-minute walk, and there are two 7-11 stores within five minutes or less. The rooms seem to vary. We had four, and two people in our group switched rooms because they didn't like the bathroom layout. Cleanliness and the bathrooms were just okay, and only a few rooms have a decent view. The area is somewhat noisy, with what seems like constant construction.

We didn't stay here, but used the washing machines and dryers. The owners were friendly and helped us figure out the machines. A 3 kg wash took 30 minutes and cost 50 TWD, with washing powder another 10 TWD. Drying 3 kg cost an additional 50 TWD and took 45 minutes. Glad to have clean, warm clothes!

The room was clean and small, fine for a day's stay. Staff were friendly and shared information about getting around Sun Moon Lake. They also sell a Sun Moon Lake day pass for 300 NTD, which includes a boat ride and cable car.

The basement room was spacious and good value for money, and the location and breakfast were good too. Before bed we had to spend a fair while hunting mosquitoes, and that also made us notice the room could have been cleaned better.
