Malkia Trees Lodge

The room was clean and had hot water, and I really enjoyed the tasty food. I was passing through from Kilimanjaro without a reservation, but they welcomed me warmly. I’d happily stay again next time I’m in the area. One thing to keep in mind: if stairs are difficult for you, ask for a first-floor room.

Malkia Trees Lodge felt like family during my two-week stay, and I’ll miss the quiet there. There weren’t shouting churches or mosques nearby, and on my last evening they surprised me with a lovely lantern-lit table by the pool. I’m in Arusha often for long visits, so I need a central but peaceful place with reliable power, hot water and a/c, plus healthy local food. I found all of that here. Naomi made delicious vegetarian meals that I’ll miss, and the coffee, tea and water were replenished every day. Room service kept everything spotless, with fresh towels and sheets daily. Albert was wonderful about making sure I had what I needed. When I was sick, he even made ginger tea, and no request seemed like too much trouble. I’d gladly stay here again.

Breakfast outside in the jungle was so peaceful, with rain and birds all around us. The lodge is tucked back among the trees, which made that meal especially lovely. We booked at the last minute and got in late at night, but the staff were there to greet us and show us to our room. They were so friendly and made everything easy. One person even shared his personal number in case we needed something overnight. I’d recommend staying here in Arusha before or after a safari.

The dining room and lounge were a highlight, and the property has lots of mature trees with plenty of birds. I stayed two nights with a colleague before we joined a group. Breakfast came with fresh juice and tropical fruit, plus eggs, beans, potatoes, tomatoes and even a pancake. Stay for dinner if you can: the goat curry with ugali, which is thicker than grits, was terrific with a local beer. Albert, the manager, was very attentive and arranged transportation and activities for us.
