Belvedere Resort

The beachside location came with a lovely breeze, and the pool was clean and glowed blue in the evening. The food was fantastic, too. Carlos and his colleague made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived, and the staff were always smiling and ready to help with anything they could. We had a wonderful, enjoyable, magical stay. The food was poor, breakfast especially so, and the coffee arrived cold. I asked for another passion fruit and was told no, with no explanation. The beach cafés shut at 9 p.m.; after that there wasn't even water available. When I asked if that was early, the reply was, “We also have homes to go to.” We booked a bungalow but were assigned another room. When we pointed this out, the answer was basically, “we decide that”. It was shocking. We also needed sunscreen and asked to exchange 100 USD so we could buy it at a nearby small market, which didn't accept dollars. The hotel refused, and we couldn't get the sunscreen. For a resort of this size, that refusal felt intentional. The staff discouraged spending money outside the property and repeatedly said the area beyond the resort was dangerous. That isn't true, as there are very good restaurants nearby. We talked with other guests who said they felt the same way we did. By the second day, it was clear to us this wasn't an issue with one employee, but with management. Hospitality felt extremely cold and rigid, and no one seemed willing to help. Guest relations were practically absent; staff seemed to work for the facility, while guests' needs and problems went unaddressed. Keeping things orderly is one thing, but treating people like a police officer or prison guard doesn't work. People have flown for 10 hours and taken a two-hour taxi ride to get here. Without a smile or basic warmth, that effort means nothing. Guest satisfaction: zero, zero, zero.

The grounds were lovely, and we had nothing else negative to say about the location. Driving there ourselves, we found it tricky to locate, but after moving to a resort in Nungwi, we felt this area was much calmer and well worth the drive. It's a wonderful little boutique hotel, with six chalets, each with its own sunbeds, plus a small block of six rooms. We stayed in a spacious chalet with a beautiful outdoor bathroom. Prices were reasonable and all the staff were excellent.

We had a really peaceful honeymoon here. The place is small, just 12 rooms, and very well kept and calm throughout. The food was excellent, and the adventures we booked through the hotel all went well. Definitely recommend them.
