Honestly, don't go. It's horrible. The rooms are terrible, and the breakfast is even worse. The place is really, really dirty. Our shower, and I use that word loosely, had a drain clogged with old hair that wouldn't drain.
I was very disappointed by my stay at Bottom Up Guest House in Stone Town. The room wasn't cleaned at all while I was there, and when I arrived, the sheets hadn't been changed or cleaned. I also came across numerous cockroaches, which was unsettling. The cleanliness was far below an acceptable standard, and the whole experience was unpleasant. I'd strongly advise potential guests to look for other Stone Town accommodation that takes cleanliness and comfort seriously.
Breakfast was free and served on the rooftop, with an amazing view. The staff were very accommodating and the price was reasonable. I had a nice-sized single room with its own narrow bathroom, working AC, and a very comfortable bed and sheets. I stayed one night and would definitely stay here again next time I'm in stone town.
I was honestly disappointed and dissatisfied. This was a waste of money, and I would never return or recommend it. The building is old, rundown, neglected, dirty, and barely maintained. The online pictures are deceiving. The towels and shared bathrooms were disgusting, and the bathroom soap is a joke. Bring your own soap, towel, and bathroom slippers if you have to stay here. Staff needed constant reminders to take care of guests, including restocking toilet tissues. ALI was especially arrogant with customers, though Juma had excellent customer relations. Breakfast had very few options: three slices of white bread, fried eggs, and black tea or coffee, with no flexibility. They could offer a simple coastal breakfast like Mahamri, Mbaazi, and perhaps cardamom tea. WiFi wasn't reliable, especially in the top-floor rooms. There was no coverage on the last two floors.
The shared bathroom and shower could use a refresh, and the place felt a bit old. Still, for this price, the twin room was pretty good. I stayed one night, and the rooftop was nice. It's close to the centre and ferry, the staff were friendly, and they packed breakfast for us when we had to leave early. A good cheap option if you're staying in Stone Town or catching a ferry.
