Bushara Island Camp

The tree house cabin was peaceful, comfortable, and rustic, and its own outdoor shower was wonderful. We spent two nights there. The small, private island is forested, fun to explore, and lovely for birdwatching. Service was friendly, and the food was good and cheap, but they often run out of ingredients. For example, instant coffee was all they had on our first day. There are no power outlets for guests in the rooms or restaurant, though the lights run on solar power. Staff can charge devices if you have a UK-style plug.

The tree house felt like something from Swiss Family Robinson and was well worth staying in. The island has good swimming spots, a canoe to rent, and a nice short walk around its edge. Staff were extremely friendly and hospitable. The food was generally pretty good and cheap, though it could be slow and the menu wasn't extensive. That didn't bother me since I wasn't in a hurry. The woman at reception, whose name I can't remember, was lovely and made our stay even better. I'd definitely recommend the place.

Camping was a fair 10USD per tent per night, and the island itself is beautiful and peaceful. We had a wonderful time with the warm staff, nature, and birdlife. The restaurant has plenty of food and drinks at reasonable prices, though soda is a bit expensive. The prices from 2016 on their website were still correct. You can take a dugout tour, for example to zebra island, though steering it isn't easy, or relax at the swimming spot. Wifi could be better: the manager listens and will buy more data when it runs out, but the connection was slow and usually only worked for about an hour at a time.

Guests and staff are the only people on Bushara island camp, so you pretty much have the island to yourself. It feels serene, with amazing views, plus a fun rope swing and pontoon. There's a choice of cottage, treehouse, furnished tent, or tent pitch. Canoes are easy to hire, and there are plenty of organized island tours.
