We went back today with my 91-year-old mother, and the order was ready right on time. I phoned at 12.30 to collect at 1pm, and Hope and Anchor had everything waiting for us. We’ve made the trip from our home in Newcastle many times just to get takeaway fish and chips and eat them on the beach. I’m coeliac, so having a gluten-free takeaway is a blessing, and the food is fantastic. The fish is beautifully fleshy, with the best batter ever, gluten-free or not. The chips are like restaurant-style triple-cooked chips. My husband doesn’t need gluten-free food and agrees they’re the very best. The sun was even shining today! Well done, Hope and Anchor.

The service was super fast and friendly, and the price was high but about what we expected. Sadly, the fish had no taste, and the chips were brown, as if they’d been overcooked or fried in old oil. It felt like a waste of calories. We got fish and chips to take away for my wife and me. Big shame, my wife’s crying now.

We tried a good mix of food, including pizza, seafood chowder, and fish and chips, and it was the best meal we’ve had among the pubs and restaurants in Alnmouth. The place is very family-friendly, dogs included. Fantastic meal at Hope and Anchor. We’d definitely come again.

We went as a party of four last night and ordered a real mix: whitebait, pizza, fish and chips, and curry. Everything was first class, and everyone enjoyed their food. The fish and chips were especially fantastic, with a gigantic piece of fish, hot crispy batter, heaps of homemade chips, and great mushy peas. Great food, friendly staff, and good value. Recommend it big time.

The fish and chips had far more batter than fish, the chips were greasy, and the chicken goujons looked like they’d come from Tesco’s frozen aisle. It was a really disappointing last meal of our holiday week, and one of the worst takeaway meals I can remember having. The more pleasant pizza and pasta meal we’d had in the restaurant earlier in the week is the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one.
