A short break at Rothay Manor helped us feel a little better during a very difficult time. We’d lost Hugo, our Great Dane, just a few days earlier, though we didn’t tell the staff while we were there. My husband, our two dogs and I came hoping to lift our spirits, and the stay made the weekend noticeably easier. The hotel is beautiful, from the lounge and dining areas to our thoughtfully finished, comfortable room. The food was exceptional, and it was a treat to have our dogs settled under the table and included in the experience. Every staff member we met was warm, kind and welcoming. We wouldn’t hesitate to return, and would wholeheartedly recommend Rothay Manor for a special getaway with doggy companions.

We’ll definitely be back, especially for the biscuits. After returning to Rothay Manor following our honeymoon stay, we experienced the grounds’ beauty and the right atmosphere throughout the hotel. It felt warm and welcoming, with no pressure to follow a schedule, which made it easy to relax from the moment we arrived. Afternoon tea was beautiful and wonderfully relaxing, enjoyed in the hotel’s own little bubble. I mentioned a couple of small things to improve, a broken outside light or light switch, and a dirty flannel in the shower. Apart from that, the hotel was immaculate. There’s a lot to appreciate in the details, from the comforting smell of wood fires to the dining, staff interactions and feel of the grounds. The staff genuinely want to help and come from different parts of the world, each with their own perspectives. Taking time to talk with them and appreciate that diversity adds to the experience. Thanks to Peter and the team.

The room was noisy and poorly prepared, and it had serious drawbacks. It was above the kitchens, beside staff quarters, with extractor pipes running inside the room and others outside. There may be very nice rooms in the hotel, but this wasn’t one of them, especially for £750 a night. This New Year’s stay was deeply disappointing and very expensive, and the room fell far short of what we expected at that price. We complained, but many issues remained unresolved and we felt our concerns weren’t taken seriously. The hotel has also ignored our formal complaint letter, sent almost two weeks ago. Rothay Manor felt overpriced and compromised, and gave us the impression that the guest experience no longer mattered once they had our money.

We had one of the hot tub rooms, and it was well worth it. The staff were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was great and clearly made with fresh produce. One small suggestion, toast should come as standard. Stunning from start to finish, and I’d happily recommend it and stay again.

The staff are always great with my little son, and the food is among the best you can get in Ambleside. A must if you enjoy a really good meal. To me, it’s as good as a Michelin star restaurant. Love it.
