The service is what really makes this hotel stand out. From reception to the bar and restaurant, staff were plentiful and attentive, which made for a very civilised stay. I ate in the restaurant and enjoyed good food and a decent wine list. The room rate was reasonable, while restaurant prices were perhaps at the high end, but the quality, service, and atmosphere made it worthwhile. It's a little posh, but not at all stuck-up. The building is older, with all the quirks that come with that. My room was reasonably spacious, well appointed, and very clean, with little to fault. Downstairs, the traditionally decorated common areas are warm, inviting, well maintained, and show the history of the location nicely. I'd suggest it to anyone visiting from overseas as a good example of how things used to be done.

The food was plentiful and okay, but the service really wasn't worth what we paid. We were seated in huge chairs that made it difficult to eat. Staff ignored us, even though other guests were asked if they needed anything. When I tried to get someone's attention for water, some staff just walked off. We had to ask twice for a box to take the leftovers home. Other guests were given hot water and sugar with their tea and asked if they wanted more. We got neither, and nobody checked whether we needed anything. I had to ask for our coats and the bill. When I paid and said we'd been ignored, I was told they were extremely busy. That felt like a cop-out, since other guests were being attended to. I wanted this festive afternoon tea to be a good memory with my daughter, so it was a shame. I hadn't expected to have to go into the restaurant.

The Imperial Hotel Barnstaple was the icing on the cake of our two-day visit. It sits by the river just a few steps from the town centre. We'd retired to Devon 18 years ago, and this was our first visit to Barnstable. What a lovely town centre, with beautiful shops and bars and such a vibrant feel. We only booked a small room because this was our first visit, but definitely not our last. We were upgraded, thank you, and the room was perfect, with careful thought given to the decor and even simple things like where the mirrors were placed. From the moment we stepped in, pleasant, helpful, professional staff looked after us so well. The decor throughout was excellent and welcoming, and the Christmas decorations were gorgeous. We didn't eat in the restaurant this time, but had an evening drink in the bar, a cosy and welcoming room. The atmosphere throughout the hotel and the friendly staff were exceptional. We look forward to returning, hopefully for longer. I'd definitely recommend it if you like old-school courtesy and beautifully done decor. Thank you all. Regards, Jude and Jeff Cooper

The staff were lovely and the surroundings plush and inviting. We had a really lovely festive afternoon tea, with tasty sandwiches, cakes, scones, jam and cream, mulled wine jelly, and a delicious chocolate Bailey's ganache fondant biscuit. It all went down well with good tea and filter coffee. A smashing start to the festive season, and we'd definitely go again.

We had a beautiful three-night DBB stay, though it was only a short visit. Our river-facing room was spacious and nothing had been overlooked, including our request for sheets and blankets. There was a fridge with complimentary drinks, chocolates, and fruit waiting on arrival. Breakfast and dinner were faultless, with a superb choice. The staff were first class, including lots of young people learning hospitality skills. We'd visit again if we're in the area.
