The room I was given was awful, down in the basement, though there seemed to be rooms upstairs with nice views. There was painting work going on in the basement too. I wouldn’t recommend staying here as a woman on your own. When I came back in the evening, the front door wouldn’t open with the keys I’d been given. Luckily, the guy was around to let me in, or I’d have had to sleep in my car. The welcome was underwhelming. The man who showed me to my room was very abrupt, and I didn’t feel welcome at all. Neither of my cards worked in the card machine, although they worked fine in Bath town a little later. He didn’t seem interested in sorting out breakfast and told me I could easily get it locally, even though I seemed to be the only guest there. On arrival, he also told me to park my car facing a different way, without much friendliness. The hotel is basic but cheap. I’ll never go back, and this experience has made me much more cautious about booking places in future. Fawlty Towers would have been quite a nice stay by comparison.

This is just my experience, and other guests may feel differently, so read reviews across the sites. Danny looked after us from start to finish. He answered a phone query, checked us in, serviced the rooms, cooked a fresh, tasty breakfast while you wait, and served drinks from the small bar in the lounge. There’s plenty of parking. The hotel is a 20-minute walk downhill into Bath, or you can catch the No. 4 bus a few yards above the hotel at St Lukes. The same bus brings you back. If you’d rather avoid the big hill, lots of buses from bay 9 go up to the top at Bears Flat, a few hundred yards short of the hotel. The hotel is dated and worn in places, and the shower pressure was very poor.

The staff were lovely, but the room really wasn’t good. The carpet had lots of stains, the floor tiles in the tiny bathroom were awful, and it badly needed a refurb. The bed was so lumpy I woke with back pain, and the room got very cold overnight. For £110, I expected a lot better.

Danny gave us such a warm welcome, and his cooked breakfast deserves a 5* food rating. The rooms are large and clean, though the furnishings are dated, and Wi-Fi is available. It’s a good spot if you enjoy walking, about 20 minutes on foot to the city centre. If that’s a bit much, the No. 4 bus passes frequently near the hotel. My only criticism of this 3* hotel is the shower pressure.

My friend and I had saved for over five years to visit England and spend a few days in Bath, but we were so disappointed with Wentworth House Hotel that we booked somewhere else for our second night. I’ve travelled extensively, and I’d never slept in a bed where the springs dug into my hip and ribs. The room was filthy, and it was obvious the bathroom had been poorly patched up. There was so little care taken that a hair had been painted into the doorway and left there. The carpet stains made us not want to walk on it barefoot. The walls were so thin that the person in the next room coughing up a fur ball might as well have been in ours. At least the room was warm and the water was hot. I wouldn’t recommend this place, especially to women travelling alone.
