The Earl of Derby - Inn

The old corner pub has been restored beautifully, and it's an easy walk from Nunhead Station. Inside feels wonderfully cosy, which makes the good food even nicer. There's also a decent choice of beer and wine.

The pub's handy spot right by the train station is lovely, though there are two other nice pubs just outside it. What let this visit down was the service and the complete lack of atmosphere. My wine was warm, so I turned down the ice when it was offered without realising why it was being suggested. The beer was tepid too.

I only stopped for a pint on the way back from visiting friends, rather than staying as a guest. There was a good selection of beers and a mix of hotel guests and locals. The bar staff were quick and friendly, and chatting with another customer about the American Football on a screen passed a pleasant hour. Handy spot if you need somewhere near the station.

We gave up on the pre-dinner drink after waiting about 20 minutes. The bar staff and I made eye contact several times, but we were ignored while other people who arrived later got served. It was busy, but still a terrible experience. We went to dinner early and won't be coming back to try for a drink.
