The Parkgate Hotel

The staff made this stay, especially Dom, who welcomed us and was really friendly and helpful. The room was a good size and comfortable, with a lovely bed, quality linen and a spacious waterfall shower. Breakfast had lots of choice, the restaurant was nice, and the bars were good places to relax in the evening. We booked the top-floor thermal suite, which was welcome on a cold, rainy day, though I thought £42 each was quite expensive even with the hotel guest discount. Book ahead if you want to use it, as places are limited. A couple of small things could be better: the room window was close to windows in another building, so a net curtain would help with privacy alongside the heavy curtains. Also, the breakfast machine coffee wasn’t very strong. The hotel itself is beautiful, and the old Main Post Office has been restored so well that you get a real wow moment walking in. It’s central too, about five minutes on foot from the train station and from the shops, restaurants and bars. We loved our stay, would recommend it, and will come back.

The room was superb, the extras were just right, and the food was delicious. From check-in through the bar, dinner and breakfast, everyone helped make the stay relaxing and unforgettable. I booked the visit as a surprise for my husband's 50th birthday. Every staff member we met was incredibly friendly and helpful. Richard checked us in, and I especially want to thank him for his kindness, professionalism and helpfulness. The bar team were fantastic too. The whole experience was spectacular, and we’ll be back.

The staff and the overall experience are what made my Thursday night stay memorable, even though the room itself was lovely. I work in hospitality, so I’m probably fussier than most, and Parkgate had a strong reputation to live up to. It absolutely delivered. Everyone I met was polite, approachable, friendly and attentive, from the doorman and reception team to the staff in The Sorting Room, the cocktail bar, room service and the spa. I wish I could thank them all personally, and hope this gets passed on. The receptionist at the spa arranged my booking, and Lucy, my therapist, was warm, professional and attentive, checking regularly that I was comfortable. It was one of the most relaxing massages I’ve had. Afternoon tea was filling and beautifully presented. Nicola and Massimiliano, I think, couldn’t have been more accommodating. I’ll recommend the Parkgate and look forward to coming back. Thanks to the whole team.

We had a lovely stay, and I’m replying on behalf of all five people in our party. The staff were pleasant and accommodating, and breakfast was excellent quality with a good range of choices. We booked a spa break and used the sixth-floor facilities. It isn’t a big spa, but there’s a small pool with a jacuzzi, a steam room and a sauna. There were hot stone beds to relax on, though no other kind of relaxation bed. I had a wonderful facial, and the spa staff were lovely. In the evening we had drinks at the bar, then coffee there before leaving after the spa. The staff were friendly without being intrusive, and there was a good choice of drinks.
