The Groes Inn

We had a really nice evening, and the beer was spot on, with all the ales tasting fresh. The ambience was lovely and I thought the price was about right. I’d go again. For constructive feedback, my son, an autistic burger fan who knows his burgers, thought the chicken burger was amazing, and apparently the brownie was good too. The lamb shank was a bit disappointing, with no lamb flavour and a somewhat stale taste. Maybe it was near its sell-by date? The chicken Milanese was nice, but the gnocchi portion was too small. They’d run out of pasta, so gnocchi was offered as an alternative. She felt it needed about ten more pieces, rather than the 20 shown in the photo. We both had spotted dick, which was really good, though it needed more custard, perhaps halfway or three-quarters up the little bowl.

We booked a one-night getaway and had a deluxe double, the dog-friendly option with a patio. It was a good size and comfortable. The restaurant was cosy, with a fireplace, and welcomed dogs. Staff were very hospitable. It’s well placed for hikes, though perhaps a bit isolated for anything else.

Our room, No 15, stayed lovely and warm while it was very cold outside. It was quiet and peaceful, with a giant bed and plenty of furniture for spending time in the room if the weather turns poor. From the first floor at the rear, we had lovely views across fields to the nearby snow-covered hills of Snowdonia (Eryri). A great spot for a brief winter stay, and we’d recommend the Groes without hesitation.

The terrible weather made this a welcome place to stop with our dog on the way to the ferry to Ireland. The staff were very welcoming, and we had a lovely meal by the fire. Slept really well, and the shower was amazing. We felt refreshed for the early start the next morning. We’ll definitely be back, and highly recommend it.
