We booked a night here because we had a show at The Hall for Cornwall, and the hotel itself has lots of history and places to explore. The staff were friendly and attentive, and breakfast was amazing, with lots of choices. The granola pots were delicious, and you can help yourself to juices. In the room, we liked the range of drinks, homemade biscuits, and the organic soaps and body lotion. Fluffy towels and a perfect mattress made for a good night's sleep. We'll definitely visit again in the future.

The Alverton's team are such a credit to the hotel. Every visit, the service has been warm and friendly while still professional. Clare and Sally have been fabulous helping me plan our wedding here in September, and I can't wait for the day. Our cocktail night was to decide on our his and her drinks, and Alex & Molly really know their flavours. We tried at least nine cocktails, and every one could have been their cocktail of the week. The food and drink were incomparable. Ollie, the head chef, has mastered his craft. I'm vegetarian and can find it hard to find food I like, but Ollie & his team impressed me. Our server Fred (I think it was Fred, sorry if wrong!) was lovely too. And room 55, The Captain Suite, is beautiful if you get the chance to stay there. High ceilings give it a royal feel, with everything plush and comfortable, but still high end and luxurious. You have to stay here!! You won't regret it, promise x

We were back at the Alverton for a show at the Hall for Cornwall that evening. The front of house team were very welcoming and friendly, and as returning guests they kindly gave us an unexpected complimentary upgrade. The room was comfortable and well appointed. Breakfast was the one small hitch: it took about 50 minutes to get our cooked order. They were reasonably busy, but it seemed ours had been missed, since people who ordered after us got theirs first. Still, it was a very enjoyable stay with mainly excellent service.

The hotel is beautiful and the staff were lovely, but the afternoon tea we had on Valentine's Day was so disappointing. It was a birthday gift to my husband. For £30 each, we left very hungry. The savoury selection was tiny and badly balanced against the sweet treats: one finger sandwich each, with coronation chicken, which isn't popular with many; a fingertip-sized mini vol-au-vent, a mini tart with pâté, and a mini smoked salmon item. That was all. We had one scone to share, but couldn't eat it because it was hard and cold from the fridge. There was lemon mousse clotted cream!!!!!! The sweet selection was fine, but by then we'd had sugar overload. If we'd paid ourselves, we would have sent it all back. A soft scone with jam and clotted cream should be the main event of afternoon tea. Don't mess with it or refrigerate it.

The setting at the Alverton Hotel was classic, with comfortable seats and spacious tables, and our High Tea was wonderful. We started with Mulled Wine, or milkshakes for the kids. The staff were accommodating with our group's food allergies and intolerances, answered our questions thoroughly, and were all very friendly. The food and tea were delicious, and service was efficient. It's certainly not inexpensive, but it's a lovely experience everyone should try at least once.
