The Cottage

The setting sounded like a relaxing stay in a lovely cottage, but we couldn't wait to get home for a proper shower and a good night's sleep. The location is great for the canal and walks, though it's also very close to a busy road junction and a main railway line. The shower mixer tap was broken, so the shower didn't work. A staff member confirmed the problem, but it wasn't fixed. The water was scalding hot, dangerous and unusable. This wasn't something I had overlooked; their staff confirmed it too. There was no central heating, just an air-conditioning unit that clicked on and off through the night, blowing warm air and disturbing our sleep. At 11pm, when the room had gone quiet and we were ready for bed, noise from the apartment above carried on for 1.5 hours. Then at 5.30am, a beer delivery woke us again, with barrels being dropped and rolled close to the apartment door. A catalogue of problems for a one-night stay.

The restaurant was available whenever we needed it, and the food came out fresh and hot. The staff were pleasant, and the area was tidy and clean. We had ample parking, and the East Midlands location was excellent. Our room was clean, odour-free and climate controlled, and we were able to check in early. Staff were friendly, professional and helpful. No complaints, thank you. This is the standard I expect from a Boutique Hotel, and others should aim for it too.

We stayed on half board and thought it was incredible value. The food was really delicious, plus there was a complimentary glass of wine and 20% off drinks at the bar. Our room was lovely, quiet, warm and comfortable, and close to The Dragon pub where breakfast was served. Would highly recommend.
