Melville Castle Hotel

The evening menu was very limited because the new chef had only been there a week, but I’m sure the choices will grow soon. The food we had was very good. Dogs are welcome, though at mealtimes they have to stay in one specific dining room. We didn’t get time to explore the estate, but it looked beautiful, and Edinburgh was convenient to visit. We loved the city on our first trip there. We were delighted by the stay. It was a late Valentine’s surprise from me to my husband, and he just said, “Wow!” as we arrived. The roaring fire in the lobby brought the castle’s history to life. Melville castle hotel has been carefully restored and has all the features you’d expect in a castle. Our front-facing room 204 was beautiful, with a comfortable four-poster bed. The staff were superb and quietly efficient, doing their best to make the stay lovely. It’s also a very popular wedding venue. We’d definitely stay again.

A lovely venue. My husband and I booked a room to celebrate a milestone birthday with our family. Everything was handled efficiently, from the booking arrangements, thanks Hayley, through to the service before and during our meal. Irina looked after us throughout the five-hour celebration, and was friendly, polite and respectful. Would we come back? Absolutely.

Dogs are welcome everywhere, even in the restaurant, and our dachshund Sadie could come along for a game of pool too. The manager was super nice and, as he has dachshunds himself, clearly loved her. The castle grounds are amazing for hiking and exploring, with plenty of trails. The decor really suited the historic castle, and the room was very clean, with a cool, authentic-feeling four-poster bed. Our room overlooked the parking area, but we were outside exploring the castle so much that it didn’t matter much. There’s no mini fridge, which could be a problem if you need one for medicine or snacks. The room was nicely heated, but the bathroom was freezing, and the portable heater they provided barely helped. That could be an issue on a longer stay. The steak was delicious and perfectly cooked. We were here for a hen night. The rooms are stunning and really feel like rooms in an old castle, with heavy drapes over the original narrow stone windows. The corridors are very spooky. The massage spa was fabulous, and so was the food. Highly recommend.
