The Premier Plus room was clean, comfortable and had A/C, a TV, and a fridge with bottled water. After that, things went downhill. I’d booked dinner, bed and breakfast, but the restaurant meal was awful, and I became violently sick with diarrhoea and stomach pains after returning to my room. I was ill all day and evening. I can only conclude it was from the burger, though I can’t be sure. I won’t visit this hotel again, and I’m disappointed Premier Inn has sunk this low. There were no draught beer pumps, only overpriced bottled beer. The room was cold, and when I asked for the wall heater to be switched on, the boy behind the bar, who also worked at reception, said it didn’t work. The menu had little choice, and there was no cheese for the burger or lemon for the gin and tonic. The burger arrived on a cold plate. The chips were frozen, overcooked and cold. When I asked if the burger was well done as ordered, he said he didn’t know and walked away. I’m not sure who cooked it, but I doubt it was a chef. A guest couldn’t get salt from a damp shaker and eventually got some from another table, after another diner told me he’d waited 45 minutes for his bland meal. Breakfast was barely passable. The eggs were good, but the bacon was very fatty and the sausages poor quality. The advertised cooked and continental choices didn’t include ham, cheese or boiled eggs; fresh fruit was limited and the bananas were soft and overripe. When I asked where the coffee machine was, the waitress pointed to sachets, then walked away muttering that she was on her own. She seemed agitated and somewhat aggressive. Eventually she took my order and reluctantly brought the coffee over. It was a poor start after the terrible meal the night before.

The rooms are decent, but I wouldn’t stay here if having food nearby matters. The attached restaurant serves breakfast, then is shut, and only unlocks at 6 for guests’ evening meals. You have to book a time slot at reception, and outside customers can’t use it, so it’s basically closed. The food takes ages and is genuinely poor. Avoid the chicken. I feel sorry for the front-of-house staff who have to deal with disgruntled guests. The server stayed polite and professional despite getting numerous complaints about the food. The experience has put me off Premier Inns completely.

The reception staff were friendly, but that was the only good part. I usually choose Premier Inn because I know what to expect. We booked a Premier Plus room and paid £10.99 for unlimited breakfast, then found a dirty housekeeping microfibre cloth on the floor and leftover indigestion tablets beside the bed. The “ultimate” WiFi was very poor. The restaurant was a big disappointment. It could be a fabulous pub, but the bar supplies were very limited. Dinner was okay; breakfast was appalling. The unlimited breakfast wasn’t a buffet as you might expect. You have to order hot food within 30 seconds of arriving, and that’s all you get unless you order again and wait. The food was a mix of cold, undercooked and overcooked. Throughout that awful breakfast, the front-of-house worker and waitress was on her phone on loudspeaker. Totally unprofessional.

Thanks to Ang, Donna, Natalie and the rest of the staff for such terrific service during our two-night stay. We had a lot to organise while packing for the trip back to Australia after an extended time in the UK. They helped us in all sorts of ways, and we really appreciated their positive attitude and the solutions they found to several challenges. Thanks again, and we hope the books, gumboots and so on come in useful! Scotty and Katy.

The staff were friendly, and the location was really convenient for my work in Bilston Glen. There was a good selection of food, and the rooms were good quality, as I’d expect from Premier Inn.
