The location worked perfectly for us coming by train to Exeter Central, with the hotel right across from the station. We arrived about four hours before check-in and could leave our luggage for £5. The staff were friendly and accommodating, the facilities were very clean, and our quiet room had everything we needed. The hotel’s artwork, stained-glass landing windows and chandeliers made the place beautiful, and the misty morning view of the cathedral was lovely, even if the rest of our second-floor outlook wasn’t much. The main downside was the bed. We had originally requested a double, and I appreciate that we were given what was described as an upgrade to a king, but it was two single mattresses pushed together with just a sheet and mattress protector. The middle was uneven and uncomfortable. The bathroom floor was about an inch higher than the rest of the room, and I painfully stubbed my toe before I noticed. All the room lights were tied to the main switch by the door, leaving no way to control them individually. It was either too bright or too dim; the little pen-like lights beside the bed didn’t help much. The lifts were out of order. That didn’t affect us with our light bags, but some older guests struggled carrying heavy luggage upstairs without anyone to help. The thin walls also meant we heard the neighbours’ TV and conversation, and doors banging. They quieted down at night, but the yelling and hollering from drunk people and partygoers in the street made it awkward to open the window for fresh air.

Handy location and a decent room for the price. The staff were friendly and checked we were managing the stairs okay while the lifts were out of service. The double bed was two singles pushed together, and there were a couple of small mould spots in the bathroom.

Easy to find and right in the centre, with clean rooms in a funky Victorian building. Parking costs extra, but that wasn’t clear on booking.com or in the information we received afterwards. Also, what’s with the huge picture of a ball of wool on the wall?

The hotel’s in a perfect spot for the city centre, and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. My room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was tasty, and nothing seemed too much trouble. A thoroughly pleasant stay in a lovely old hotel. I’ll be back.

We only needed one night because we were going to a concert at The Phoenix. The hotel was pleasant and had all the amenities we needed, with lovely reception staff and a clean room. Being right beside Exeter Central train station is very handy, though Saturday night can be a little noisy. That comes with the location, and you can always ask for a quieter room. We had a very nice stay, thanks.
