The Wool Merchant Hotel

It’s a big old building with lots of rooms, and it looks like it could do with a revamp. Still, the room was clean, spacious, airy and comfortable, and the bath was deep and big, with clean, fluffy towels. The staff were impeccably dressed, and the reception guys were lovely. Downstairs at breakfast, the service was attentive and nothing seemed too much trouble. Definitely worth the money.

The room’s toilet was brown and the water dirty, and there were hairs in the shower, which didn’t look properly cleaned. The whole hotel smelled like a toilet from the entrance right into the room. I got locked in the first room and had to be moved. Food service was very slow, with only one person taking orders and serving. When it arrived, the food wasn’t worth the wait and tasted appalling. Breakfast was bland, except the mushrooms, which were nice. Even the juice tasted off. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

Our room hadn’t been renovated yet, but it was clean and beautifully furnished. The hotel’s in a historic building and seems to be in the middle of renovations, while the many public areas have a modern, trendy feel. The breakfast room was clean and airy, with comfortable chairs, though I’m not sure if it’s been updated. There’s a very clean, modern games room with two pool tables, table football, sofas and a TV. The complimentary coffee machine is in the breakfast room and available all day. On the downside, the floorboards squeak everywhere, probably hard to avoid in an old building, and our room had some damp mold around the window and cobwebs in one corner.

Very good value, with well-appointed rooms, though ours could’ve been cleaner. The mattresses were too soft and there was only one pillow. The restaurant’s dinner menu was limited, but the food was excellent and portions were generous. Breakfast was classic British hot food, with a range of breads, jams and pastries.
