The Feathers Hotel

I still enjoyed my stay and would visit again, as the downsides were fairly minor. It’s a quaint hotel with a fantastic bar and rooms, and the check-in staff were friendly. It gets busy, though. Some women behind the bar were snappy and surly. I know it was crowded, but I don’t want to have to shout my order across the pub. And I’ll say thank you once my Guinness has been served. My parents taught me to thank someone after the transaction, so the emphatic “Thank you” while pouring it felt unnecessary. I paid just under £30 for rump steak with chips and a grilled tomato. The steak was tiny, like it came from the smallest cow in the field. I was tired on my first night and didn’t send it back, hoping for better next time, but two nights later it was the same. The housekeepers were also shouting down the corridors, though I’ll leave that for another time. Those are the reasons for my lower service rating.

The food was great, the beer amazing, and the staff really attentive. They’ve made a big improvement in being dog friendly. Would love to come back. Thanks, guys.

We had a very nice, spacious area, and when staff came by they were friendly and polite. But the wait was slow, even just for drinks. Most of the food was mediocre, probably frozen, though the sausage roll and sticky toffee pudding were good. The burgers were dry and a letdown. At those prices, I expected a lot better. Sorry, but I wouldn’t return.

The Lawns has lovely rooms, and we like its location as part of The Feathers. There’s a cosy feel to the place, and the food is pretty good. The problem is that both the rooms and shared areas at The Lawns are far too hot. We had the windows open constantly in early January. That seems wasteful and bad for the environment.
