We needed a clean, straightforward place to break up a drive from the north of Scotland to the south, and Avondale House worked well. The owners were waiting in the dark when we arrived late, which was a lovely welcome, and parking was easy. Our room and en-suite were clean and suited a short stay. It was especially good value compared with other local options, and I’d recommend it as a friendly stop between the far north and the central belt.

Steve & Sue were warm and easy to talk to, and offered advice when we needed it while giving us space the rest of the time. We stayed three nights in the Triple Room with our five-year-old son. The room had comfortable beds, windows that opened, a TV, and tea, coffee and water that were replenished. There was free parking on site too. The location in the centre of Kingussie made getting around simple. A restaurant and play-park are across the road, the Co-Op and other shops are a two-minute walk away, and it was an easy drive to The Highland Wildlife Park, Landmark Adventure Park, Aviemore and other attractions. The roads are great to drive on. We’d happily stay at Avondale House again when we’re back in the area. Five stars.

We spent 20 minutes trying to get the shower to work, but it kept switching between scalding hot and freezing cold, and there were no instructions. If you skip breakfast, you can’t buy coffee on its own either. The lady was quite firm that coffee should be taken in the room, but the Nescafe tastes horrible and isn’t proper coffee.

The full Scottish breakfast was really tasty, and Zeus the rottweiler was absolutely adorable. Our room had a very comfortable four-poster bed, an Edwardian-style bath, and its own separate toilet. Fantastic room.

We had a great time staying here over NYE. Sue was super friendly, and our room was cozy and pretty. I’d recommend it and would definitely come back.
