Faye at reception was extremely helpful and arranged a taxi for us, but that was the bright spot in a very poor stay. The room was reasonable, though the toilet was hard to flush and there were no USB charging points. We were woken by screaming children next door in the early hours, then again at 6am. Breakfast was awful. They'd run out of bacon, with no muffins or pastries, the coffee was undrinkable, and the orange juice was so pale and tasteless it barely deserved the name. The breakfast room and surroundings felt unwelcoming, and many guests there seemed to be staying at public expense. We also got a bad feeling on arrival, seeing people gathered around reception whose stays appeared to be taxpayer-funded. I wish it had been made clear at booking that the hotel was housing guests at the Government's request. I wouldn't have booked if I'd known. IHG talks about customer experience, but it seems to me they care more about profit from Government contracts. We won't stay at one of their hotels again.

The staff are the reason I can honestly give this five stars. The hotel itself needs a full refurbishment, but the manager and the rest of the team made the stay feel special. The young women covering reception, both day and night, were very dependable, and the managers were there with help and support. They deserve credit for making it work.

Breakfast had a really good selection, and the room was clean and a decent size. We were made to feel welcome when we arrived, and the staff were friendly whenever we spoke with them. I'd stay again next time I'm in the area to see family.

The breakfast was a joke, with none of the things I've had at other Holiday Inns: no muffins, pastries, fruit for the yoghurt, and only watered-down fruit squash. Getting to the room was a bad start too, as nobody was at reception and kids were running around. When someone finally showed up, the room had holes and filler, a broken plug, a broken lamp, a faulty toilet flush and a sink plug that was broken as well. Very, very poor.

We brought our dog and she was welcome without an extra charge. Breakfast was included in the price too. It's a cosy place, with rooms that are comfortable and perfectly adequate.
