We stopped in for dinner at the pub, though we weren’t staying at the hotel. We’d booked for four in the restaurant, but were so comfortable by the fire in the bar that they brought our meal over without any fuss. Everything tasted delicious and looked nicely presented, and the staff were helpful and friendly. Exford is a lovely village, and I’d happily return.

We were quite a large group and booked fairly late, yet the food came out quickly. The food and drinks were excellent, and the staff made us feel very welcome. Definitely recommend it.

I can’t comment on the accommodation, as I’ve never stayed there, but our restaurant booking was a really awful experience. On an earlier visit, we booked for two and were seated in the restaurant, which was nicely decorated and served amazing food. That’s why I booked the same way again when I was in the area at Christmas. This time, although there was a free table for two in the restaurant, two hotel guests arrived just as we did and were seated at the table we thought was ours. We were taken instead to a four seat table by the bar and told there was no table service there, so we’d have to order drinks at the bar. I have no idea why a restaurant booking ended up in the pub area. It was very loud, so we left. We’d driven 30 minutes especially for this restaurant, booked nine hours ahead, and ended up with no dinner. It ruined our Boxing Day evening. I’d avoid it unless you’re staying at the hotel, since hotel customers might get priority for restaurant bookings.

The village is beautiful, right in the heart of Exmoor National Park, and there are lovely scenic walks and hikes nearby. We had a great weekend here and loved the hotel. The staff were welcoming and friendly, breakfast was freshly made and a lovely start to the day, and the bar food was really good. It’s cosy and relaxed inside, with a playground just across the way for anyone visiting with children. I’d definitely come back.

We were here with a large group for our friends’ wedding in the village, and the family who run the crown made the stay feel like being in a family home. Everyone on staff looked after us so well, and they were attentive and helpful throughout.
