The rooms are compact, but the bed is really big and comfortable. What made the place for me was how friendly and attentive the staff were. Nothing was too much trouble, and they made it feel homely. It was a refreshing change from the other hotel I usually book, so I’ll come here again instead. I thought this kind of service had died out. Breakfast was great too, and the price was fantastic. Well done, guys.

It was a fairly average stay, right in the middle between good and bad. The hotel felt modern and clean, the room was nice and I slept well. The restaurant was a pleasant space, and there was plenty of food at breakfast, though the cooked breakfast wasn’t inspiring: half an uncooked tomato and mushrooms with an odd taste, for example. My main gripe was the strong cigarette smell in the corridor as I left to check out. It was unpleasant, and luckily not something you encounter much these days. I mentioned it to reception. They acknowledged what I said but didn’t seem very proactive about doing anything. It wasn’t a huge issue since I was leaving, but still.

I met family for coffee on Wednesday morning after they’d travelled from St Ives. The young lad barely managed a grunt, and the older female staff member greeted me by asking, “What do you want?” You can decide whether that counts as good service. I didn’t stay at the hotel and wouldn’t recommend it.

The room was clean and the service was good, but getting to the Lodge involves a bit of a meander. Remember to enter your registered on arrival. I was disappointed to find they only take card payments, so on principle I won’t buy anything there if I happen to return.

I stopped over for the horse racing, obviously. The room was good, everything was clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was the weak point: average at best, not awful, just not enjoyable. It filled the need for something to eat without being a meal you’d look forward to. For convenience I’d stay here again, but I’d keep my food expectations lower.
