Cairn Hotel Newcastle

I usually stay in central Newcastle, but tried this hotel instead and would come back. It’s conveniently close to the metro and within walking distance, with a bar and restaurant on site. The staff were nice. Room 226 was at the rear, quiet and tucked away on its own. It had a lovely bathroom and decent-sized room and facilities for the price.

The staff were friendly and accommodating, and the location works well for Jesmond, though it’s quite a way out from Newcastle. The rooms are spacious, with comfortable beds, but feel dated and oddly furnished. £135 for a Saturday seemed very overpriced.

We had a warm welcome from the staff and stayed in the separate hotel a minute down the road. It’s a great location, less than a five-minute walk from a metro station. The entrance security could be better: despite having an intercom, you could pull open both the front door and the internal security door. The room was serviced every day, thank you, but it got quite hot at night. The bathroom was tired, and the extractor fan looked like it had never been cleaned. Prices were hiked for Great North Run weekend, as I’m sure they were elsewhere.

The location is ideal, but our room was at the very top of the building, which isn’t suitable if you have mobility issues. It was a struggle dragging the suitcase up there. The bathroom had a very unpleasant drain smell when we arrived. The room was very hot at night. I didn’t use the fan because it was dusty too. There was so much dust that we had to clean out the wardrobe before putting our clothes in, and the top of it was thick with dust and still is. There was no staff in the sister hotel, and the cleaner didn’t do our room either. Hopefully they will tomorrow.
