The room was clean and lovely, and the bed was really comfortable. It felt a bit plain and dated for the price, though that wasn't a major issue. Dinner was great, with plenty of choice, good food and lovely service. The tables were packed in a little tightly, so it felt cramped. What brought this down to four stars was the bar afterwards. It was quiet, with only three tables to look after, but I spent 15 minutes at a time with an empty glass and couldn't get the waitress's attention. She was polishing glasses and folding napkins behind the bar. When I finally got her attention, she asked what I wanted from over the bar and handed the drink across, instead of taking the order and bringing it to our table. Then a service charge was added, even though the drinks were just simple pours.

Really nice, well-appointed room and very friendly staff. The bar was good, and the restaurant looked pleasant. Breakfast was okay, though ordering things fresh is the better choice. The fried eggs that had been cooked ahead were hard. I'd come back.

The restaurant coffee was awful, so we switched to coffee from the bar. At weekends that came with an extra £5 each, on top of a £20 breakfast. It's the principle more than the money. We had a lovely week's holiday at Bedford Lodge Hotel, and the staff and service were excellent. The room was beside rooms being upgraded, which got noisy at times, and the hotel is outside town, about a 12-minute walk away. That was why I gave it four stars.

The beds were really comfortable and we used all the facilities, but I felt it was a bit overpriced. The staff weren't very welcoming either, and made it seem like having us there was a chore.

The coffee was nice, and the chocolates waiting on arrival were a lovely touch. The rooms were generally okay, but housekeeping needs to do better: we ran out of toilet roll and there were cobwebs in the corners. More plug sockets by the bed would help too.
