Gateway Hotel

The place is being refurbished, and you can see its potential. The rooms were comfortable, the price was good, and the location suited us. Still, we had a couple of disappointments. Our booking said breakfast was £5.50, and the woman at reception confirmed that at check-in. At breakfast, we were told a full English wasn't available because they had no sausage, so we all chose omelettes instead. When paying, she asked for £8 and wouldn't honour the price in the email, saying it was old. Even if the email price was wrong, that wasn't our fault, and we'd only booked a couple of weeks earlier. When we came to leave, reception was locked with no checkout instructions or staff around. We didn't know where the keys should go, so put them in the kitchen. Customer service needs improvement.

The lady who makes breakfast cooked the best poached eggs I've had in a long time, in my opinion. It's clean and tidy, well priced, and in a great location. You could find fault if you looked hard, but they're good people who go out of their way to make sure you have a great break. My partner and I would absolutely stay again next time we're in Newport.

My single room was simple, but had everything needed for a short visit. It stayed clean, with daily cleaning that included straightening the bed, topping up tea and coffee, and emptying the bin. The main drawback was hearing noise from other rooms through the walls. Aside from that, it's a great basic hotel at a budget-friendly price.

The bed was really comfortable, and breakfast was cooked to order. They're modernising the hotel, with up-to-date wall panels and decor already in place. It's just outside the centre, an easy walk to Rodney parade football and rugby stadium, and not far from the station. The location has that typical city feel nowadays. Free parking too. I'll be back.
