The restaurant and bar downstairs were fantastic. The chef and kitchen team deserve a mention, the food was some of the best hotel and pub food I’ve had, with lots of choice, premium ingredients and generous portions. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the on-site Starbucks was handy for a coffee on the way out. I stayed three nights for business and will use the hotel again for meetings and overnight stays in the Midlands. The location is great, with plenty of shops a few minutes’ drive away. The rooms are good and well equipped, if a little small, with a big bed, huge TV with Sky Sports, and a fantastic bathroom and shower. I think the double bed was two singles pushed together. There was lots of mould on the bathroom ceiling, which needs a good spray and clean, and the tea and coffee cups are tiny. I didn’t get to try the gym, pool or spa, but I’m sure they’re as good as the rest of the hotel.

The gym and swimming pool are lovely, and the staff there were very helpful. Breakfast was lovely too, with a wide choice of hot and cold food and fresh hot items coming out every few minutes. Sheila and the team were attentive and helpful. We stayed in a club room and the bed was amazing, but I’d bring slippers because the carpet looked ready to get up and crawl away. It was noisy from about 6.30. After a midnight visit, the toilet flush hadn’t quite caught, and the dripping water woke me first. The heating sounded like a kettle boiling but never quite ready to pop. I believe there’s a moth issue: I found a few dead ones in the room, and two live ones flew out when I put down the bath mat. We were clearly under the goods entrance, where linen went out in big, noisy bins to a huge truck. It reversed with a sound like the next door alarm.

The gym and swimming pool were great, and the food was lovely. The Village Hotel’s location worked perfectly for us, and the discounted room rates made the weekend easier for some of the crew. The crew of HMS Gloucester had a reunion there this weekend, marking 35 years since the end of the Gulf War. Honey, Dylan and the rest of the staff were amazing and made sure we had an outstanding time. Thanks to everyone at the Village hotel for the best weekend.

The room let things down: there were no sockets by the bed, and the carpet badly needed replacing or a clean. The food was perfect, and the atmosphere was just right for the weekend. The staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful, and made us feel welcome, especially lovely Sheila.

Check-in was five stars, and the breakfast staff were accommodating and friendly. Shelia and Nina went out of their way to help and were always smiling. I love the decor, and this is certainly one of my favourite hotels. The food was so delicious I ordered another set of chicken wings.
