Melfort House

Dinner is well worth booking: it began with sherry in the parlor, then a thoughtfully put together four-course meal. I had perfectly cooked duck breast in a light sauce, followed by strawberries with an angelique surround. Breakfast the next morning was cooked to order, from eggs to porridge. The Garden Room was lovely, spacious and quietly luxurious, with beautiful bedding, antique furniture and a detailed fabric canopy over the bed. Matthew Anderson had left thoughtful welcome notes and a wee dram of scotch in a crystal bottle. It’s a small manor with only a few rooms, run by a delightful proprietor. The house sits peacefully at the end of a loch, with trails and lovely walks by the water. A true bed and breakfast, and a hidden gem.

Matthew was a fantastic host, and the breakfasts were excellent. We also enjoyed the dinner option, which needs 24 hours’ notice. The house had fresh cut flowers in most rooms. Its position made a great base for day trips around Oban and Kilmartin Glen, with a wonderful view across Loch Melfort.

We booked the Shepherd's Hut for my in-laws, and they have something exciting to look forward to. The host is friendly and lovely. The owner says this fascinating Monkey Puzzle Tree is one of Scotland’s tallest registered trees. Be sure to have a look, and see the photos!

We had a really special break in an unspoilt corner of Scotland, with beautiful walks and a visit to world-class Kilmarten Glen, which I thought was better than Stonehenge. The room was lovely, well equipped and had an incredible view over the sea loch. Breakfast was a treat, cooked to order by proprietor and chef Matthew using the best local ingredients. No surprise this place won best B&B in the Highlands 2024. Everyone should visit this hidden spot. X
