About this property

Set just outside Guildford in the heart of the outstandingly beautiful Surrey Hills, yet only 55 minutes from central London and close to the M25, this charming historical hotel is located in idyllic surroundings and is near to many attractions. The location makes it ideal for guests to visit many attractions in the immediate area or slightly further afield in Dorking or Guildford. The family-friendly business hotel is minutes away from the village of Dorking and England's largest vineyard, Denbies. Guests will find restaurant and bars in the immediate vicinity, shops 13 km away in Guildford, and Gomshall railway station 4. 3 km away. Nearby places of interest include Polesden Lacey (14 km), RHS Garden Wisley (22 km), Clandon Park (10 km) and Thorpe Park (27 km away). London Gatwick Airport is approximately 30 km from the historical hotel and London Heathrow Airport is around 50 km away. Originally built in 1920 on the site of 2 cottages so the locals 'had somewhere to buy beer', the hotel takes its name from the whortleberries or 'hurts' which grow locally in the village on nearby Pitch Hill, the site of one of the village's scenic walks. Renovated in 2009, the hotel offers 21 guest rooms and facilities include a restaurant, bar and pub, a lobby with cloakroom, conference facilities and a car park. For an additional fee, guests may also take advantage of the room and laundry services. The guest rooms, all of which are en suite with a shower and bathtub, are individually and tastefully furnished to a high standard to offer a high level of comfort. Some of the rooms have gorgeous views of the village or the gardens and all the rooms have tea and coffee making facilities, a telephone and TV, a double bed, hairdryer, radio, Internet access, an ironing set and central heating.

The area is lovely, especially if you're out hiking or mountain biking. We stayed one night, had dinner in the pub and breakfast the next morning. It's not especially fancy, but everything was clean, comfortable and lovely. The staff were particularly friendly, helpful and accommodating. We hope to stay again soon.

I’ve been coming here for years, and The HURTWOOD still feels like a home from home with a window on the world. It’s a rare local business that holds onto old-fashioned values while bringing in fresh ideas, fabulous food that reflects changing ways of life, and a lively team. The location is exceptional, and the professional, caring staff treat everyone with respect and make an effort to help. Thank you.

The autumn colours in the hills were lovely when we visited in early November, and there are beautiful walks all around. We had a terrific one-night stay at this delightful hotel in the Surrey Hills. Claire made us feel welcome and arranged an extremely comfortable, spacious room. The bar and restaurant were great, with friendly, chatty staff, and the prawn linguine was outstanding. Breakfast is cooked to order, and my eggs Benedict was perfect. We’ll definitely return. Thanks to everyone at the Hurtwood!

We liked it so much we came back three times in a short stretch. The rooms are really comfy, everyone on staff is friendly, and breakfast is so good, especially the pancakes. The general store half a minute away also has delicious cake slices. Dinner service was the one letdown for us: it felt slow even when the pub was fairly quiet, and our food was forgotten.
