The Wee Waif

The pub was packed and clearly popular with locals, but still had a lively, welcoming feel. We only ordered a few snacks rather than full meals, and they were well prepared and up to the usual standard of a dependable Greene King pub menu. Food and drinks were fairly priced, making it an easy stop for a casual bite or pint. The Wee Waif is a familiar Greene King pub and hotel in Charvil, just outside Reading, with that traditional roadside inn feel. Comfortable and informal, it draws locals and travellers alike. The room rate was very reasonable for the location near Reading and access to the surrounding area, so it offers solid value for anyone after a sensible stopover rather than luxury. The accommodation is dated and could do with refurbishment. The decor and furnishings feel tired next to newer hotel chains. Still, the room was clean and well maintained, and the bed and bedding were surprisingly comfortable, which is what matters for a decent night's sleep.

There were 22 of us, including nine hungry and tired children, and the restaurant got our food out very quickly, bringing everyone's order together as fast as the waiters could carry it. Nobody had to wait longer, and there were no complaints. Even one picky child finished the whole meal. Everyone said the food was enjoyable and tasty. The staff were friendly and helpful, and nothing was too much trouble. It made for such a lovely evening. I was really impressed with the restaurant, though I didn't use the hotel.

I arranged a Christmas get together at the Wee Waif for 10 people with sight loss through my role at a local sight loss charity. The service was excellent, attentive and helpful. We had a lovely table in the conservatory, which was bright and away from the general pub noise. We'd pre-ordered our meals, and they arrived in good time without feeling rushed. There was plenty of good quality food, and lots of empty plates at the end. For the amount and quality, it was excellent value. Everyone enjoyed it, and we'll definitely be back.

We had a lovely family meal on Sunday. The roasts arrived hot and the portions were wholesome, and we enjoyed dessert too. Emma treated us so well and made us feel welcome. Thanks to her, our waiter and the chef for the excellent, professional service. It was really well priced, and we'll be back soon.
