The Lookout in Rye

Breakfast was tasty, and the man serving us was lovely. The room was a decent size with nice interiors, and the hotel is well decorated. My one gripe is the £10 parking charge. I know it’s a small thing, but I think parking should come with the stay. I can’t remember staying at another hotel where paying guests couldn’t park for free.

The room was large, but cold and smelled damp. The hotel is right in the centre, which makes it easy to explore town. I couldn’t get a response from staff before arrival, and hardly saw anyone while there. It was also the first hotel I’ve stayed at that didn’t acknowledge my birthday at all. Breakfast was edible, but I’m not sure the person in charge understood what I was saying. I’m definitely not coming back.

At £190 a room per night, this was probably the most outdated and disappointing hotel I’ve stayed in. I felt exploited. The room was tiny and didn’t feel clean, with mess left in the bathroom from previous guests. The photos say it all. I’d been promised two rooms with showers, but one had a bath instead, so staff clearly hadn’t read the messages properly. The whole property feels neglected. Six years ago it was a good place to stay with a pool. Now it feels run down and disappointing. We were really let down by the poor service, with only one junior staff member around. The photos of a £190 room are absolutely shameful.

The staff were kind and attentive, and breakfast had lots of fresh options and was delicious. My room at The Lookout in Rye was cosy, spotless and full of character, with thoughtful touches that made me feel welcome. The location is ideal, just a short walk from the cobbled streets, lovely shops and beautiful Mermaid Street. It’s a lovely place to slow down and enjoy Rye’s atmosphere. I really loved my stay.
