The room was freezing during our stay because the heating didn’t seem to work. Maybe the radiator was broken, and I know the cold weather itself can’t be helped. Still, it’s a lovely place with very friendly people, and the value for money was really good. We’d come back if we were in the area again, and I’d recommend it either way. Thanks!

We used the weary friar inn as a base for a week and had a standard Room. It’s a beautiful, quirky old place with lots of character, a spacious dining area, and a large events room set up for weddings and parties. The owner and staff were lovely, and breakfast was really good: fry-ups or cereal, basic fruit like apples, oranges and bananas, plus tea, coffee and juice. They filmed some scenes for Beyond Paradise here, which makes sense given the inn’s character. It’s very dog friendly too, with dog ice-cream and events or group gatherings for dogs. There’s extra tea, milk and loo rolls in the hallway for guests to help themselves to, along with the kettle and stationery in the room. The bathroom was basic but worked fine. For the price, though, our room was small, the bed creaked badly, and the dressing table had only an unstable, non-adjustable stool rather than a proper seat. The rooms could use modernising while keeping their character. You’ll need a car for activities and shopping, as there’s nothing nearby. The narrow roads and fields aren’t for nervous drivers or caravans. A quirky, old, historic, family and dog-friendly place to stay.

Immy was a charming waitress, quick to help and very accommodating. I especially recommend the sticky toffee pudding. We had a fabulous family meal on a late Sunday evening in December, with great food served promptly.

We only stopped in for lunch and a pint, since we didn’t stay overnight. It’s a wonderfully cosy pub, with friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere. Our food was delicious too. Definitely worth a visit.

Most of my Sunday roast went back to the kitchen, but I was still charged £16 and nobody apologised. The waitress seemed to brush off my complaint and did nothing about it. The roast itself was probably the worst I’ve had: the whole plate seemed to have been reheated several times, leaving everything dry and tasteless.
