The airport is close, there’s parking, and checkout was easy. Beyond that, I didn’t feel comfortable. They greeted us very warmly, but their friendliness dropped as soon as we said we didn’t want to or couldn’t pay in cash. Shoes aren’t allowed in the house, which is fine, but it’s awkward when you’re sharing the place with strangers. You can wear slippers in the shared bathroom, but can’t walk to your room in them. The house had a very strong, distinctive food smell. At check-in, we had to read and sign several pages of rules, and there were signs all over the bath explaining what you could and couldn’t do. I understand the owners want to keep things clean, but this was too much. There’s a strict quiet period from 9 pm to 7 am, yet the owners themselves made a lot of noise until midnight. Public transport to the city takes about an hour. The linens smelled fine, but the comforter smelled of sweat, as if it hadn’t been washed in a long time.

After driving 11 hours from Scotland, arriving to find a rundown-looking house and a porch envelope with a key was a shock. There were four A4 sheets of instructions and rules to read, including what we couldn’t do and what we had to do during the stay. The last thing I wanted after that drive was to read and sign paperwork about the fines for doing something wrong. We had to remove our shoes in the porch. The owners said they didn’t live there, but seemed to, and came to check we’d signed the forms. The rules said we’d be fined for having someone in the room with us, staining sheets, smoking, and several other things. It was a long list. I’ve never stayed at a B&B that told guests to take out the rubbish on departure. There was also a strict instruction to be quiet after 9 pm, which added to the prison-camp feeling. The bed was so uncomfortable I couldn’t sleep at all. This felt like someone’s house with rooms being rented out, not a B&B. I’d booked because there were so many good reviews, so the disappointment on arrival was a real surprise. One of the sheets said a good review would earn a free breakfast on a future stay, which makes me question whether the reviews are honest. A friend stayed in a much nicer hotel a few miles away for only £30 more. I’d recommend paying extra, and I know I will next time I’m in coventry.

The hosts were amazing and made us feel very welcome. It’s a lovely place with a comfortable bed and good internet, and shops are close by. The tea, coffee, water, and biscuits were a nice touch. I was even able to wash my clothes after travelling, and there are some really good takeaways nearby.

Such a clean, pretty, comfortable, and safe place, with lovely hosts. I’d love to come back!
