The White Star Tavern

The worn mattress was my one real suggestion for improvement. Otherwise, our room was clean and had everything we needed: tea, coffee, biscuits, a couple of water bottles, milk and a beer. We also liked having the game room and sitting area for guests. The little hotel is above a restaurant run by the staff, and everyone we met there was kind and friendly. We ate there several times and enjoyed both the excellent breakfast, with menu dishes and continental options, and the high-quality dinners. It’s in a lively, cute part of Southampton, with restaurants along the block. Friday and Saturday nights got a bit noisy, though things settled around 11pm and the windows cut down the street noise fairly well. The cruise port is just a quick taxi ride away. I’d definitely stay again if I’m in the area.

The upstairs guest lounge was a highlight for me. It has a small library of fascinating books, and I spent a couple of hours reading an absorbing book about British ships published in 1911. I enjoyed the stay so much that I might look on eBay for a copy of it. We were able to check in early so we could leave our luggage. They had space and kindly let us do that, though I know it might not always be possible. Our room at the White Star Tavern was spacious, with a comfortable bed and a lovely view of the street’s winter holiday decorations. Breakfast was included, with a buffet for things like juice, toast and yogurt, as well as a full sit-down menu. Food and drinks are also available downstairs in the tavern. A wonderful overnight stay in Southampton.

The breakfast was delicious and there was plenty of it. Bridget and the whole team were lovely and looked after us so well from start to finish. The pub has a great atmosphere, and our room was beautiful with lots of thoughtful touches. I’d happily stay again.

We came in as a group of four without a booking, and they politely checked whether a table was available. Even with several larger groups there, service stayed superb. Our waiter and server were friendly, engaging and efficient, and we weren’t rushed at all. We had a relaxed evening chatting in the beautiful setting. The chefs were brilliant. It was easily the best meal I’ve had in a very long time, and the rest of our party felt the same. We were seated near the hatch, and every time I looked through, it was like watching a food show. They were so focused and professional as they plated everything. We’ll all be back with family and friends. A five-star jewel in Southampton!
