The staff were lovely, which is why I gave two stars. The room felt very worn: the carpet looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in decades and felt awful underfoot. My partner had trouble sleeping because we could hear everything through the paper-thin walls. The bed was uncomfortable too, and then there was the unexpected £10 parking fee. Honestly, I wouldn’t stay again.

I can’t comment on the food since I ate out, and I left too quickly the next morning to try breakfast. From looking back at the reviews, it seems the five-star ones are from people who only ate here, while the one-star reviews are from guests who stayed overnight. My room was filthy and falling apart. The mattress sagged at the sides so badly I felt as if I were sleeping on a hill, and the pillows were just as hard and uncomfortable. The bathroom was very dated and needed a proper scrub and renovation. The whole place creaked so much I worried the floor might give way. The walls were paper thin: I heard every word of a phone call from the next room, as well as a baby crying from halfway across the hotel. Noisy guests aren’t the hotel’s fault, but the walls could offer more soundproofing. They also charge £10 a night for parking. For the four-star price, this felt like one-star accommodation. A basic Travelodge would be a better bet, at least for cleanliness.

I’ve never felt moved to review a place before, but there was literal blood on our bed and the rooms were dirty. Light came through the huge gaps under the doors, and we could hear the corridor and nearby rooms clearly. I also had serious concerns about staff behaviour and management. The night porter made me feel intimidated and uncomfortable. Duty manager Rebecca handled the situation badly and, in my view, needs more training. Other reviews also say she seems unsure of her role. We felt unsafe during our stay. Later, management denied the issues and closed our complaint. I wouldn’t return or recommend it.

We’d stayed here five times before because family live nearby, and it was always convenient. This visit changed that. At check-in, we were told about a new £10 parking fee that hadn’t been mentioned in the third-party booking. The hotel was freezing, with the corridor thermostat showing 13 degrees C, so I turned on the bedroom radiator. It got so hot that I burnt myself when I touched it. The room was large but very dated, with mould throughout the bathroom. Apart from the clean towels and linen, nothing felt clean. We tried the 2-4-1 food deal before going out. It was a good price, but the food was poor and the pizzas only just edible. Back late, we could hear people in the hall and next door through the thin walls. We paid extra for breakfast that day, but there were no plates or glasses. When I asked about coffee, a staff member pointed me to the room-style instant sachets, despite a fancy coffee machine beside them. We saw the waitress use that machine herself. The breakfast was the worst I’ve had, and £25.60 for two was nowhere near worth it. The place isn’t being maintained, and we won’t be back.

After a lovely walk in the rain, I popped in for a drink. It felt nice and homely, the staff were great, and the latte warmed me right up.
