The Caledonian Hotel

The room was clean, roomy and comfortable, with a modern stand-up shower. We paid £80 a night for two nights, with breakfast not included, but the noise made sleeping difficult. Traffic, trucks and the nearby ferry were all very noticeable, as you’d expect with the hotel right on the main road and close to the harbour. I’d rate the room 10/10 and the noise 1/10. We didn’t use many services. We did eat in the hotel restaurant on the second night, but both food and service fell far short of expectations, also 1/10. I wouldn’t choose to return. After the first night I would have checked out if I could have cancelled the second without losing money.

The restaurant can get busy, but our room was a good size and very comfortable. It suited us well. The hotel is nicely located and has free parking. I’d definitely stay again.

We really enjoyed being here, especially the meals and drinks at the on-site restaurant. The rooms were a little small, though that didn’t bother us much since holidays aren’t usually about sitting in the room. What did disturb the peace now and then was the sound of doors slamming in the corridors. Soft-close fittings or signs asking guests to be considerate might help. A great stay overall, with a few small things to improve.

The rooms were clean and tidy, but breakfast was very disappointing. Even though we got there in plenty of time, there wasn’t much food and the choice was limited. The porridge was in mass-produced pots you can buy in any shop. The standout was the young man on reception on 29/09/25, who gave us such a warm welcome.
