Mildmay Arms

We loved the setting in Queen Camel, and the old pub is lovely. Staff welcomed us and helped carry our bags. Our room was small but clean and comfortable, though the mattresses sagged a bit and the sockets by the beds were awkwardly tucked behind the headboards. Dinner was great and reasonably priced. Breakfast was included and adequate, if nothing special, and the landlord's suggestions for places to visit were helpful. The nights were a real problem. Loud music went on past 1am, which was annoying after a long journey when we wanted to sleep. It began at a reasonable volume, then was suddenly turned up. We hoped to eat there on the second evening but found out food service had stopped at 5pm. In such a remote village, we didn't know where else to go, and they could at least have mentioned this over breakfast. Fortunately, we had snacks in the room. After another noisy night, the second breakfast was more sparse. When we were ready to leave, we couldn't find the owners and had to ask the cleaner where to leave the key. A lovely location, but we left disappointed and don't plan to return.

The continental breakfast was plentiful, with toast made to order, thick wholemeal slices, cheese, cold meats, cereal, yoghurt, croissants and a huge pot of tea or coffee each. Everything tasted good and should satisfy most appetites. It was clearly described on the website, though I did hear one woman complain to her husband that it wasn't an egg. We stayed two nights in a twin room, the last one available, and found the inn hard to fault. The couple who run it were friendly and always on site if anything needed sorting. Our room was well equipped, with a clean, perfectly adequate ensuite. Both mattresses dipped slightly in the middle. We prefer firm beds, and hotel mattresses are usually too soft for us. I also like a heavier duvet, but that's just my preference, so I'm not marking them down for either. I think there are three ensuite rooms. If we're holidaying in the south West again, we'd happily return. Great little coaching inn.

Breakfast service was lovely, with someone checking whether we wanted more toast or coffee. The bed was so comfortable and the shower was great too. We had a brilliant night here. Thank you!

We stayed one night for a friend's wedding at Sparkford hall. The staff were really friendly and the room was very nice. Breakfast was included, but we were too late for it. I think they stopped serving around 10:30.
