The check-in staff member was great, and this isn’t aimed at her at all. The room itself was a letdown. There was a strong urine smell in the bathroom all night, and I’m not sure it had been cleaned beyond having fresh towels put out. The room was okay, but the bedding didn’t seem up to the usual standard, so I wondered if the bed had been changed properly. I hope it had. The Wi-Fi was down, which I could have lived with, but there was no mobile signal in the room either. The restaurant was shut, and though I hadn’t planned to eat there, it made reception feel quite run down. The hotel served its purpose, but I wouldn’t stay again. This is the first time a Premier Inn has disappointed me, which is a shame because I often recommend them.

Room 316 was excellent and on the quiet side facing the car park, but the service was the worst I’ve ever had at a Premier Inn, despite staying with them often. I’d booked a Meal Deal for two nights. On Wednesday 4/3/26, Reception told me no meals were available that evening because of staff shortages, so I went to a local Chinese place instead. At breakfast on Thursday I was told there wouldn’t be food that night either. I walked across town to Deep Blue on Lairgate for fish and chips. When I got back to the PI, evening meals were being served after all. Nobody at Reception had thought to tell me things had changed, and I was furious. The service was abysmal and appalling. Frankly, I think PI should give me a full refund for the stay and the very poor service.

The location worked really well for me, with the Minster and the shopping center right next door. Greggs is handy for a breakfast butty, and there’s a decent pub across the road that serves food. The railway station is close enough to walk to, and the old town center is walkable too, though a bit farther away. The building’s only a few years old but could use some TLC. The rooms were clean and comfortable. There’s no bar, just a few fridges with bottled beer and wine.

The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. They found me an iron and board, then a phone charger after I’d foolishly left mine at home. The location was easy to find, and the multi-storey car park is right next door. You do have to pay for it, as the website says, so that wasn’t a surprise. My room initially smelled strongly of damp dog. I’ve no objection to dogs being allowed in rooms, and I’m sure this was a service dog, but with windows that don’t open there’s no proper way to air the room. The staff apologized and quickly moved me to another room. Later, when I went down for my prepaid evening meal, I found out the chef hadn’t turned up. That wasn’t the fault of the staff on duty. They were very apologetic, assured me I’d be refunded, and suggested a local alternative. Beverley Hills Diner was lovely and only a couple of minutes’ walk away. I’ve always found Premier Inn staff friendly, and they seem even friendlier and happier the farther north I go. It was a nice place to stay, and so close to five stars.

The staff were brilliant, nothing was too much trouble, and we had a good laugh and a chat about holidays. The young woman helped us with the screen check-in and did it for us. Our room was lovely, the evening meal was lovely, and breakfast was great. We stayed one night on 22nd August. Thanks to everyone on staff.
