If all you need is an inexpensive place to sleep and shower, this worked for me. The bed linens were clean, the room didn’t smell, the temperature was comfortable, and the AC wasn’t loud and distracting like I’ve heard even at more expensive places. Wi-Fi worked too. A storm knocked out the cable while I was there, but we still had lights, so that was a win. The beds were small. For the price, breakfast was good: waffles, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, toast, muffins, coffee, hot water, and juice. There weren’t many staff around, but they smiled and did their jobs. I have trouble with older showers. These looked dirty because of their age, though I’m sure they’d been cleaned. We only got a small soap and shampoo, so bring your own if that matters. Walmart is easy to reach across the freeway, and getting on and off the freeway is simple. If you want a cheap spot with a clean bed, this place will do. If you’re used to name-brand hotels or resorts, keep going.

For $90 a night, the Super8 in Amarillo TX was a good deal. I found it online and didn’t need fancy amenities for one night. The king bed and pillows were comfortable, and the room and bathroom were clean. There was a digital TV, internet, fridge, combination safe, drip coffee, and microwave. The women at check-in and check-out were nice. Breakfast was simple, with no eggs or bacon, which was fine after sitting in the car all day. We didn’t hear disruptive noise inside or outside.

During my initial inspection of Room 110, I found what looked like a serious bed bug problem on the second bed, the one closest to the outer wall. A blood stain on the sheet first caught my attention. When I lifted the mattress, I saw numerous live bed bugs underneath. I crushed two to check, and blood came out, which suggested they had fed recently. There were enough bugs that this didn’t seem like an isolated case. I’m recording what happened and asked for the room to be inspected and treated right away to prevent other guests from being exposed.

The rooms looked nice, seemed clean, and smelled pleasant. Staff were very friendly and helpful. But I saw several roaches in my room, which I’ve never experienced at the many budget motels I’ve used on my twice-yearly trips through the panhandle. It was so late when I arrived that I didn’t ask for a refund or go elsewhere. At 5am I rolled over to check the time and saw one scurry across the bed in the light from my phone. That was enough. I got up and left. Texas needs regular, frequent pest control. There should also be roach measures inside the rooms between exterminator visits. Roaches carry diseases, and I think this motel needs to make pest control a priority. I’m adding it to my one-time-only list. If roaches bother you, stay somewhere else. I couldn’t relax, and I’ll be furious if I bring any home with me.

We felt welcome and had plenty of time at breakfast, without being rushed. The room was fresh, clean, and not overly perfumed. It was our first stay at this location, and we really enjoyed the room. We’ll definitely come back.
