Residence Inn by Marriott Atlanta Midtown/Georgia Tech

The location was great, but the older rooms have renovation choices that don’t seem thought through. I was put in a hearing-imparied accessable room, and the thermostat was tucked behind the living room TV. That captures the feel of the hotel: it’s nice, but the design could have been better considered. The door frame was poorly hung and let in lots of light, while the windows and balcony didn’t block outside noise well. The AC and heating blower was louder than I’m used to, so I had to wear headphones to get to sleep. It was fine, but I don’t need a kitchenette. Next time I’ll probably spend a little more and stay at the Moxy or AC down the street.

It’s close to food and restaurants, and I’d stay here again. There is some street noise, but I wouldn’t call it bad. The brick building has a bit of charm, maybe because it used to be a university dorm or an apartment building, unlike some newer places. My room was smaller, but it had a small kitchenette, a decent-sized bathroom for the room, and a good-sized closet. It also had a terrace overlooking the front entrance, with windows covering the whole wall where the terrace door was.

The location is a big plus. Getting here from the airport on MARTA was easy and cost $3.50 to Midtown Station, much cheaper than an Uber. There’s a good bar attached to the building, though you have to go outside to reach its entrance, and another bar across the street that I didn’t try. Food options are plentiful, even late at night. Scooters are scarce right by the hotel but easier to find near the GA Tech campus. I also saw a Waymo parked by the 11th Street cab stand every time, though I didn’t try it and may next trip. For the price and convenience, I’d stay again. The room was comfortable and looked recently renovated, but some details felt overlooked. The door looked crooked because of the gaps around its frame, and I had to push hard with my shoulder to open and close it even after scanning my key. The windows were dirty and screwed shut, though the blackout curtains kept the room dark well after sunrise. The bed was comfortable. The TV was a basic Samsung with its original remote and Dish Network, unlike the Marriott Bonvoy setup I expected. That wasn’t a dealbreaker, just out of step with what I’m used to at Marriott. The building is older, but it looks like money has gone into keeping it presentable. The lobby elevator seems newer, though it gets more use than the larger one around the corner that staff mainly use. The stairwells have that old-building smell. Breakfast is served, but I never made it downstairs to try it. Check-in was ordinary and again left me wondering why I use the Marriott app. Across all my stays, only once have I arrived, shown my ID, and immediately gotten a room key. That’s a Marriott-wide observation, not a complaint about this hotel.

I missed breakfast because I slept in, but I’d stay here again. The room was very clean, with a large bathroom and a small kitchen. My only minor issues were that the bathroom had two body washes and no shampoo, and room 302 needs a new door seal. The gap underneath was so big I could see people walking by, and their light was bright beside the bed at night. I took NyQuil and passed out, lol.
