Maxwelton Braes Lodge and Golf Course

It was a fun, beautiful course, and I’d play again when I’m in town. It was right around the corner from where we were staying, and the price felt very fair for both the course and location. It’s not long, and it was well kept. The greens were really soft and fuzzy, unlike the usual surface. The clubhouse needs renovation, and the drink choices, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, were very limited. Since you don’t spend long there, that didn’t change how much I enjoyed the course.

The course was enjoyable, with a good pace and plenty of trouble to get into despite being on the short side. I played on July 12, 2023, and rated the pace 10/10. There were lots of twosomes. The tee boxes were in really good shape, 9/10. Greens were soft and plush, a little slower than I’m used to but fair and playable, 7/10. Fairways got 5/10 because they should be mowed shorter to make them easier to distinguish from the rough. The small pro shop didn’t have much merchandise, so 8/10 there. I bought rounds on Group Golfer, and they were well worth the price. Good course, highly recommend!

There’s a lot of history here, from hosting the 1948 LA Rams, who practiced on the 11th Fairway before their game with Green Bay, to hosting the Wisconsin Open. I’m looking forward to many more rounds. The course was well maintained and the staff were friendly. The Mulligan Membership is the best golf deal I’ve come across, and I appreciate management making that move to help local golfers like me.

The greens and tee boxes were in good to great shape, but there was hardly any grass on the fairway, mostly dirt rather than just dry, dead grass. It cost less than other courses, but I’d have rather paid a little extra to play somewhere nicer.
