Super 8 Beckley

We were exhausted after traveling since early morning and checked in after 8 p.m., so we stayed just to sleep for a few hours before getting back on the road. Looking back, we should’ve slept in the car. I can’t describe how filthy the place was. The non-smoking room smelled like smokers had just been in it. The sheets and towels were stained and smelly, with cigarette holes. The interior hall and room hadn’t been vacuumed in days, and bags of garbage and dirty towels sat along the hall the whole night, from check-in until morning. I saw one bug on the bathroom floor and was relieved that was the only one, though during the night I felt like there were others crawling on me. There was no coffee maker in the room, though there were cups. Breakfast in the lobby was bread and coffee. I don’t know if there was a toaster or whether it worked. The place was so disgusting we didn’t want to eat or drink anything.

The staff were polite, but this has been the most nerve-racking of all the Wyndham properties I’ve visited. I’ve been traveling for months, the weather turned cold, and the price was reasonable, so I stayed. The mattress pad was soaked with something revolting, maybe alcohol or blood. The heat took almost an hour to start working and then wouldn’t regulate. In the morning, the shower had no water for 15 minutes, then finally reached body temperature, warmed up for about 20 seconds, and went cold again. I had to borrow a small vacuum right away because the floor seemed to have been missed. Then I needed cleaning supplies to deal with feces on the toilet seat and mucus in the tub. The bathroom, microwave, and mirrors had grey streaks on them, as if the same cleaning cloth had been used. There was urine on the floor all around the back of the toilet. I skipped breakfast. The only cereal was Frosted Flakes and Raisin Bran, and there was a burnt waffle in the maker. The mix seemed old.

I don’t usually write reviews, but this was the most disgusting hotel I’ve stayed in. I was exhausted from a long travel day, and a couple had told me they’d already tried two other places and found them full, so I stayed. Otherwise, I would’ve gone somewhere else. The room smelled musty, the bathroom tiles were cracked and broken, and the floor didn’t look vacuumed. There were bugs in the room. It was a non-smoking room, yet the bedding and toilet seat had cigarette burns. I thought about not sleeping on the bed, but pulled back the blankets and lay on top of the sheets instead. On my way out the next morning, I noticed spots on the door. They looked like they might be blood, though I had to use my phone flashlight to check. I hope someone had just spilled coffee and it hadn’t been cleaned up.

I’d give this place zero stars or less if I could. The first room smelled so strong and awful it gave me a headache and made me nauseous. They switched me to another room without a problem, but that one was filthy too. Everything needed a thorough cleaning, from the grimy walls and filthy floor to a bathroom I wouldn’t use. Then there were roaches everywhere: crawling on the walls, behind the headboard, in the drawers, and around the fridge and corners when I checked. They were big ones. Don’t stay here!
