Alila Ventana Big Sur

The hot tub looking out at the mountains was a highlight, with views that made it easy to just sit and slow down. Mornings on the balcony were lovely too, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the forest. Alila Ventana Big Sur is tucked away in nature and feels wonderfully peaceful. The soaking tub added to that relaxed, spa-like feeling, and the restaurant paired gorgeous views with food we really enjoyed. Staff were warm and attentive without hovering. A quiet, luxurious spot if you want to switch off for a while.

The redwoods and scenery are what make this place special, and the friendly, helpful staff added a lot to our stay. I enjoyed visiting Alila Ventana Big Sur, though the price left me expecting more polish and consistency. Check-in felt disorganized. We were offered lunch, while other people arriving around the same time were turned down by another receptionist. Some guests got a welcome drink, but we weren't offered one. Those differences felt out of step with the price. Dinner was tasty and well prepared, but the limits on how much we could order seemed unnecessarily rigid for an all-inclusive luxury resort. The complimentary happy hour drink that used to be offered is no longer included, another small hit to the value. Our room was comfortable and thoughtfully designed, but the finer touches didn't match the hype, especially compared with other Alila properties or higher-end Hyatt stays. Nothing was plainly wrong, it just lacked the finish I expected. I'm glad I went, but with the cost and uneven experience, I don't know that I'd return without some improvements.

We had a great two-night birthday stay at Alila Ventana Big Sur, and we've already booked our next visit. The concierge was quick to answer texts and made room service, fire bags, and rides easy to arrange. We also appreciated getting an unexpected room upgrade for the second time, especially for the birthday. The pools were quiet and it was easy to find a place to sit. We both liked the food at Sur House, where the staff were friendly and chatty, and the views were fantastic. The team overall was accommodating and lovely. A few room details could use attention: the door squeaked badly, a bathroom window slat was broken, and the curtains were hard to open and close. We didn't report those things. Room service was good, though parts of the order sometimes arrived at different times, which seemed odd.

We had a really nice stay at Ventana, and Brian at the front desk was a pleasure to talk with. He patiently handled all our questions and concerns. Checkout could be clearer. It would help if the resort sent luggage instructions ahead of time, especially for guests with activities after checkout. I had to check my phone repeatedly during a paid activity, which interrupted the experience for both me and my partner and felt rude to the host.
